The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Moreno-Garcia has once again created an intriguing premise: what if Dr. Moreau not only lived on an isolated estate in nineteenth-century Mexico, but had a beautiful, intelligent, and savvy daughter? What if their carefully constructed life with the hybrids and Moreau's assistant, Montgomery Laughton, is disrupted when the handsome son of Moreau's patron comes for a surprise visit? What truth(s) will be uncovered?
While Moreno-Garcia's prose brings the reader in, weaves together two differing perspectives, and raises some questions of what it means to be human, the premise fails to live up to its true potential. The "secrets" Moreau keeps do not seem so secret after all and the romantic connections leave something to be desired. This is not to say the book is not worth a read, only that much of its potential has been missed.
