Al Capone by Swann Meralli (Author) and Pierre-François Radi (Artist)

No matter what comes to mind when you hear the name, Al Capone, your imagination likely conjures a larger than life figure. Together with Radi's highly stylized art, Meralli manages to paint multiple versions of Capone in one tale so that your associations with Capone become more detailed. While well-researched, these multiple versions of Capone do not succeed in making him a complex figure as the violence of his life and choices dominates this graphic novel. The good Capone arguably did pales in comparison to the murders and beatings he either administered personally or ordered callously. Although some historical notes help clarify the text, further context would have helped present a more well-rounded and clarified tale.
