Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

An erratically written letter from a beloved cousin disrupts the elegant debutante life of Noemí Taboada. It's a desperate cry for help that Noemí responds to quickly, traveling to a faraway and foreboding house in the Mexican countryside. There she finds her cousin's new charismatic husband who has an eerie air about him along with his mysterious family members. As the peculiar dread that surrounds the house and family begins to penetrate Noemí's thoughts and even dreams, she must find a way to rescue her cousin and, perhaps, even herself.

While a slow-paced start, Moreno-Garcia's prose explodes with vivid and haunting imagery and compelling, if haunted, characters. Perfectly recreating a gothic novel in a fresh setting, Moreno-Garcia weaves an ensnaring tale.
