Queer teen baking queen, Shireen Malik, has recently broken up with her secret girlfriend of exactly a year, Chris. However, an email quickly cuts through her wallowing: Shireen has been accepted as a contestant on the first ever season of the Junior Irish Baking Show. Her initial excitement becomes more complicated when she learns that not only is Chris competing too, but another intriguing contestant, Niamh, seems to be flirting with her. As the competition continues, so do the complications. From an arrogant competitor to a mysterious food fight to fervent instances of racist, xenophobic, and fatphobic online harassment, Shireen experiences it all. Jaigirdar’s clean and delightful writing style shines through Shireen as a relatable and realistic teen girl who finds comfort in baking, baked goods, and reality TV. Perfect to be enjoyed by those who have loved and lost (and maybe loved again), been passionate about food in any form, and wanted to root for an underdog.
