Book to movie, 6: The Book of Speculation
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.
Simon Watson discovers that his mother is not the first person in his family to be a circus mermaid or to drown. And not only to drown, but to drown on July 24--which looms just weeks away. Is this mere coincidence or a family curse? And will this coincidence or the curse pass to Simon's sister, Enola?
The Book of Speculation is wonderfully and grippingly written--I read it in a day. I was immediately engaged in this atmospheric exploration of mermaids, books, magic, and family. With the right actors, this story could take off on screen.
Come for the mermaids, stay for the horseshoe crabs. No, I will not elaborate.
