Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Club: Roll Call by Molly Knox Ostertag (Author) and Xanthe Bouma (Illustrator)
Jess knows she's a bit weird and a bit of a loner--okay maybe a lot of each of those. But she has her best friend Olivia and their game of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Olivia acts as the Dungeon Master (DM) and Jess is the sole player. In the game, Jess's character is the brave--but also loner--Sir Corius. Jess is happy with their arrangement, but then Olivia wants to add new players by starting an official D&D club at school. Beyond that, Olivia is also thinking of running for student council. Will this ruin their special bond? Will Olivia--whom everyone seems to like--even have time for Jess anymore? Turns out, middle school and D&D have a lot in common.
Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Club: Roll Call by Molly Knox Ostertag is a delightful introduction to a middle-grade graphic novel series. Jess and Olivia are both relatable as are their middle school struggles. Deftly mixing in the fantasy story of their D&D game also allows for a magical element to this story. Xanthe Bouma's illustrations are clear and evocative, drawing readers in.
If you love D&D, struggled with middle school angst, or just want a story about friendship, this book is for you.
