Chrissie is a bad seed. Even her mum doesn't like her. But Chrissie supposes that's okay, after all, she did just kill little Steven. It--killing the boy--gave Chrissie a sense of power she'd never felt before. She knows she'll do it again.
Twenty years later, Chrissie is living under the name Julia with her young daughter Molly. Julia tries hard to be a good mum--like mum Chrissie never had. But then Molly breaks her wrist in what Julia knows is an accident, but it was an accident Julia caused. They make take Molly. Julia might lose the only good thing she's ever done.
Author Nancy Tucker has crafted a heart-wrenching novel. Tucker's prose is brutal in a lyrical way, perfectly encapsulating the points of view and minds of Chrissie and Julia. Tucker is a master of tension for even though the murder of Steven takes place at the very beginning and Julia's early chapters reveal that Chrissie was caught, readers will find themselves tearing at their cuticles in anticipation and fear. Beyond the violence, Tucker also portrays regret and love in immensely insightful ways.
The First Day of Spring is not for easy reading, but that does not mean it isn't an impeccable experience.
