Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases by Paul Holes with Robin Gaby Fisher

Paul Holes is known to many who follow true crime, especially cold cases or the Golden State Killer (GSK) case. In Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases, Holes, a retired Cold Case Investigator, details the cases that have haunted him throughout his life and career. Delving into graphic and horrifying aspects of these crimes, he also honestly reflects on how these crimes have affected his life, his career, and his relationships.

The case of GSK is a connecting thread throughout Unmasked as it was one of Holes's earliest case obsessions. However, it was far from the only one Holes reveals in this brutally honest narrative that is a cross between true crime and a memoir. The crimes of GSK span literal decades and involves terrifying acts ranging from a peeping Tom to sadistic murder. The investigation spanned even longer and had many false starts, many broken-hearted people, and many sleepless and disturbed investigators--including Holes.

Far from suggesting that solving crime doesn't get to him, Holes shares personally about his struggles with anxiety and PTSD. He opens up about how while his compartmentalization helped him get through cases, the dam at some point started to crack. Holes doesn't shy away from mistakes he's made in his family and romantic lives. However, through it all, Holes has felt that this was his calling.

Honest, harsh, brutal, engaging, and obsessive, Unmasked is a riveting read.
