A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Feyre's family is starving and so, she hunts. While stalking a beautiful doe she spies a wolf with something off about its eyes--perhaps it is a fae. She shoots the wolf and later sells its pelt for a handsome price. However, waiting at home is angry faerie seeking vengeance. In penance for murdering one of his friends, Feyre goes with the mysterious fae who she comes to learn is the high lord of the spring court, Tamlin. As she comes to accept that she will live the rest of her life in the fae realm, Feyre learns more about the ways of the faeries from their delightful wine to their dark curses. However, it is not only her knowledge that grows, but her feelings for Tamlin. Just when they seem so close to being together, they are parted. Desperate to save him, Feyre returns against Tamlin's direct orders and soon finds herself in graver danger than she could have imagined. Will she be able to save Tamlin, his court, and herself or will she be forced to choose?

A Court of Thorns and Roses begins as a fae retelling of Beauty and the Beast. This portion of the book is delightful and romantic. However, this book can best be described as a splice. The second portion of the book featuring dark trials in another fae court, feels a bit disconnected from the first. This disconnect is a bit jarring, but readers can overcome this transition. In turns dark, romantic, and fantastical, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a grounding entrance into author Sarah J. Maas's larger world.
