Holly Quick Backlist Reviews, Bookman!: Week 18
Just to get through some backlog of books I've read, I'll post 4 super short reviews of backlist titles every Wednesday.
- Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher (Simon & Schuster, 2008): A hilarious yet, at times, dark look at Fisher's life. This book also champions mental health which is welcome. 5 stars.
- Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis by Timothy Egan (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012): A welcomely nuanced look at a photographer was a head of his time, yet still of his time. 4 stars.
- Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War by Karen Abbott (Harper, 2014): A stylized history. However, the inclusion of confederate women will make the reader wonder the goal, though it could be to show the plight of women and abuse by men on both sides as well as to show an honest look at who supported what atrocities. 4 stars.
- Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir By One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII by Chester Nez (Dutton Caliber, 2011): The amazing story of one of the original Diné (Navajo) code talkers, well contextualized in American and Diné history. A vital read. 5 stars.
