The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone (Author) and Greg Call (Illustrator)

On a typical field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, Ruthie and Jack visit the Thorne Rooms--a set of sixty-eight exquisitely designed and decorated miniature rooms each showing off a different period and location. However, after meeting someone who works at the Art Institute who then shows Jack and Ruthie a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Thorne Rooms, they discover a mysterious key. This key proves to be magic and allows the two eager kids to explore the fantastical rooms and worlds that grow beyond them. However, many questions, tribulations, and dangers abound during Ruthie and Jack's adventures.

Marianne Malone has wonderfully crafted the start of an adventure series for middle grade readers. Ruthie and Jack each have their strengths and struggles and work marvelously together as a team. Tinged with history and potential peril, the journeys of Ruthie and Jack are sure to delight, engage, and inform.
