Holly Quick Backlist Reviews, Bookman!: Week 58

Just to get through some backlog of books I've read, I'll post 4 super short reviews of backlist titles every Wednesday.

  1. Spelled by Betsy Schow (Sourcebooks Fire, 2015): It's basically a retelling of the Wizard of Oz. I was impressed with some of the creativity (e.g. a character named Hydra who has a house full of heads that she can switch on and off) and some of the new magical creatures. However, the prose is nothing to write home about. Still quite enjoyable though! 4 stars.
  2. Party Like a President: True Tales of Inebriation, Lechery, and Mischief From the Oval Office by Brian Abrams (Workman Publishing Company, 2015): If you have ever found yourself wondering which presidents were fun at parties, what presidents nicknamed their penises, or how they signed their love letters, this is the book for you. It was a fun read and I have learned some great trivia (anyone wanna guess who was sworn in as VP drunk?) and the conclusion was more serious than I expected (emphasizing how what is acceptable varies overtime and that being the presidency is incredibly stressful). 5 stars.
  3. Vikings Beyond the Legend by Gunnar Andersson (Royal British Columbia Museum, 2013): This is just the book about the Vikings exhibit, but it's got great photos and cool information. 5 stars.
  4. Better Days and Other Stories by Joss Whedon (Dark Horse Books, 2011): This is the second set of Firefly comics. I had read some of these before, but the story where Wash's old friends are honoring him really gets you. 5 stars.
