Book series to TV show, 10: The Lotterys

Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book series that I think could make a great TV show.

The Lotterys is a charming middle grade duology by author Emma Donoghue and illustrator Haroline Hadilaksono. It focuses on the Lottery family. The Lottery Family has four parents (two moms married to each other and two dads married to each other), seven children (some adopted, some biological), and five pets. The Lotterys Plus One's main conflict is the addition of one of the dads' fathers who fell out with his son due to his son's family. Additionally, "Grumps" as he's called by our lead child, Sumac, has dementia. This brings lots of changes for Sumac as well as the other Lotterys. The Lotterys More or Less focuses on changing traditions--sometimes by necessity.

Overall, this theme of change is relatable to the middle grade audience as that age group faces tweenhood and beyond. Change is also relatable to a broader audience as change is the only constant in life. Additionally, the diverse and loving family of the Lotterys will be a pleasant watch. While there are mishaps, the love the family has for one another never fades. This would make a great central set of characters. I think I'd like to see this show with live actors, although Hadilaksono's illustrations are lovely and would make a warm-feeling show.

All of these are reasons why The Lotterys duology could make a great TV series. Finally, I could imagine additional adventures for the family to have.
