A Deadly Education: A Novel by Naomi Novik
Orion Lake needs to die. This is what Galadriel Higgins has determined. After all, Orion keeps saving people, and it's getting annoying. Not only does he have a gaggle of doe-eyed followers who would be delighted if Galadriel just vanished, but the Scholomance needs to be fed.
Galadriel and Orion are just two students in their junior year at the Scholomance where they are learning to hone their magical affinities before returning to the rest of the world. While the Scholomance is dangerous, it's less dangerous than the outside world, where there are creatures determined to attack and consume young wizards (though there are some of those in the Scholomance too).
Told from Galadriel's POV, author Naomi Novik weaves a tale of magic, caste systems, relationships, mysteries, and power. Novik's worldbuilding unfolds intriguingly to any reader. Galadriel is a dynamic protagonist with a fully realized personality, goals, and perspective. While Galadriel is not liked by her peers, she will shine through as a fascinating character.
The ending of A Deadly Education will leave readers desperate for the next book in the series.
