Judging books by their covers, 10

Just want to share some books whose covers I love! Once every 4 weeks, I'll post 4 books and super short synopses of books whose covers catch my eye.

  1. Carmilla: The First Vampire by Amy Chu (Author), Soo Lee (Illustrator), and Sal Cipriano (Illustrator) (Berger Books, 2023): Inspired by the gothic novel that started the vampire genre and layered with dark Chinese folklore, this queer, feminist murder mystery graphic novel is a tale of identity, obsession and fateful family secrets.
  2. Taproot: A Story About A Gardener and A Ghost by Keezy Young (Oni Press, 2022): Blue has been living as a ghost for a year when he meets Hamal, a beautiful and sweet gardener who has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Together, their friendship develops into something more, but being a ghost, Blue can never truly be connected with Hamal.
  3. Vincent: A Graphic Biography by Simon Elliott (Frances Lincoln, 2024): Taking us through his short but explosive life, this graphic novel paints a vivid picture of Van Gogh’s unusual youth, his famous early failures, his discovery of a new style of painting, his tragic suicide, and the meteoric artistic legacy that followed.
  4. Winter Solstice Wish by Kate Allen Fox (Author) and Elisa Paganelli (Illustrator) (Beaming Books, 2024): On the shortest day of the year, people reach out for light--and one another--in this luminous, lyrical winter solstice story.
