Dungeons and Dragons: Dungeon Club: Time to Party by Molly Knox Ostertag (Author) and Xanthe Bouma (Illustrator)
Olivia is a great DM. The best DM. The most dedicated DM. She is sure that her, her friends, and her love for D&D is forever. That is, until her older sister, Lu, comes home from college. Lu used to be a dedicated songwriter and singer. But now she's planning on switching her major from music to something more adult and mature like economics. Olivia and Lu's mom praises this, but the news sends Olivia into a spiral. Will she lose her love for D&D? Will growing up make her change? Worse, will growing up make her lose her passions and her friends?
Dungeon Club: Time to Party by Molly Knox Ostertag (Author) and Xanthe Bouma (Illustrator) follows Olivia and her players on their next adventure. Together they face bullies, coming into ones own, and, possibly, even romance. Can change be a good thing or is it as terrifying (and dull) as Olivia fears?
Ostertag has created a wonderful world filled with real feeling, diverse characters with relatable problems. Even though I am outside of the targeted age range for this book, I find it delightful and still really relatable. The fear of losing your passions or becoming just some boring adult or even just change is all too real for people of a variety of ages. Meanwhile, Bouma's wonderful illustrations perfectly show off both the school world and the fantastical world that these characters inhabit.
