The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

Patricia Campbell joins a book club in the hopes of making her world larger. The first attempt at being part of a book club fails miserably--she didn't even read the book. But then, other members split off with Patricia to form their own book club where they read what they want--which is often true crime.

After a book club meeting, Patricia is brutally attacked by an elderly neighbor who seems crazed. Shortly thereafter, the neighbor passes away, but her mysterious and handsome nephew, James Harris, stays. He begins to intertwine himself into Patricia's world. While welcome at first, soon children start to die on the other side of town and Patricia begins to question James's stories. At first suspecting something more mundane, Patricia soon discovers that James is not a typical predator--he is something preternatural.

Can Patricia summon the power and the community to confront this beast in time? What will be lost as she gathers the strength?

With some moments of graphic horror, The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix carries with it themes of community and the cost of waiting to act against evil. It is a thought-provoking read.
