What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon

Anti-fatness is ubiquitous, insidious, and, scarily enough, on the rise. Aubrey Gordon deftly, carefully, and thoughtfully explores how and why this is true. She shares personal experiences along with others' anecdotes with anti-fatness from fatcalling, a form of street harassment faced by fat people, to trying to fly on an airplane to seeking basic medical care. Unfortunately, much of this book will be shocking to readers due to how pervasive anti-fatness is, but that does not make the contents of What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat any less convincingly presented.

Moving past the presentation of anti-fatness in our society, Gordon seeks authentic fat activism. She expertly lays out opportunities for improvement in our laws, culture, and policies. While she admits she does not have all the answers, as no one does, and acknowledges that her hopes will likely take a long time to come to fruition, Gordon provides a beginning roadmap to a possible and brighter future.

More than a validating read, What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is a rallying cry, one that should be read by all, regardless of size.
