We Listen to Our Bodies by Lydia Bowers (Author) and Isabel Muñoz (Illustrator)

Not long ago I got to visit with one of the dear kiddos in my life. He requested I read him books and I happily obliged. One of the books his parents had gotten for him from the library was We Listen to Our Bodies by Lydia Bowers (Author) and Isabel Muñoz (Illustrator). This is a part of the same series as We Can Say No by Bowers and Muñoz.

In We Listen to Our Bodies, Bowers tells about a day in Deja's life. Deja has a tough day and isn't sure why she gets so upset while playing with a friend. Her teacher helps her navigate those feelings and learn how to listen to her body better in the future. Deja discovers how to check in with her body, how to identify its cues, and how to respond once she realizes what her body is trying to tell her.

While this is a picture book geared towards a quite young audience, I do believe that the lessons that Bowers imparts could be useful for adults as well.

Once again, Muñoz's illustrations are sweet, clear, and effective. The kids and adults are all rendered in a pleasant and easy-going way, but their depictions do also clearly show the emotions of the characters (even when the characters aren't sure of how they're feeling). This combination is effective in allowing children to relate to the characters and understand that emotions can sometimes be tricky to disentangle.

I highly recommend We Listen to Our Bodies by Lydia Bowers (Author) and Isabel Muñoz (Illustrator).
