Book to movie, 19: Gods of Jade and Shadow
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia has a knack for crafting intricate worlds grounded in reality, folklore, and fantastical elements all her own. Her 2019 novel, Gods of Jade and Shadow, is yet another example of this work.
To briefly summarize the plot, Gods of Jade and Shadow follows Casiopea Tun in Jazz Age Mexico. While she lives a somewhat charmed life, it does not feel fully her own. One day, as she explores her wealthy home, she comes upon a mysterious box in her grandfather's room. Curious, Casiopea decides to open it, but then frees the Mayan god of death. The god of death is free, but his goals are not complete. He wants Casiopea's help extracting revenge on the brother that stole his throne. Casiopea's fate is tied the god's and so the two set out to save both of them. But the dangers are everywhere, even within themselves.
Gods of Jade and Shadow would make an excellent movie because it is well-paced, has dynamic and leveled elements that ebb and flow well together and apart, and features a compelling main character. This movie (if cast well) could fulfill folks looking for adventure, romance, and the sense that you can change your fate.
