The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
While I remember enjoying The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein when I was a child, when I first read it aloud as an adult to one of the kiddos in my life I was quite shocked. As a child, I remember enjoying the idea of a tree that would take care of me, Silverstein's wonderful illustrations, and a tranquil ending.
However, as an adult the only remaining thing I appreciated was the illustrations. Those are still wonderful. The message of the book had completely transformed for me. The tree gives and gives and gives to this boy who, eventually, becomes a man. Giving unconditional love and support to a child is one thing, but as the boy aged, he did not ever care for the tree and, ultimately, as the tree destroy itself to briefly give him enjoyment. This is not healthy and this is not okay.
So, overall, I do not plan to read this book to any more kiddos and I'd recommend you don't either.
