The Girl Who Kept Going is a charming picture book by veteran professional soccer player Tiffany McCarty and illustrated by Elena H. The book follows young Tiffany finding her passions, wondering what her path in life should be, and then applying herself to her dreams. The ending of the book leaves open the possibility of a series. Finally, the book is rounded out with a comprehension quiz, a connect-the-dots activity, and a drawing prompt for readers.

Tiffany starts off trying out cheerleading, but then finds that what she truly loves is soccer and track. She continues to do these activities as she grows up, even when times are difficult. Throughout it all, Tiffany believes in herself and is supported by her loving friends and family. This story will undoubtedly teach the target audience—kids three to eight years old—a positive lesson about following their passions in life. McCarty has thus crafted an inspirational tale.

Illustrator Elena H. has drawn charming artwork that, while relatively simple, is quite effective. Elena H.’s pictures are clear and easy to parse for a young audience. Tiffany is rendered sweetly, as is the world around her. This is sure to be appreciated by any young reader.

At times, I wanted a touch more detail about McCarty’s journey as I think it could only add to the inspirational message of her book. For example, McCarty writes that Tiffany had hard times in high school, and I think even just a few more words about what kind of hard times Tiffany was experiencing (with schoolwork, with an increase in competition for soccer and/or track, with family, with friends, etc.) could add some more dimension to the book.

The Girl Who Kept Going by Tiffany McCarty is a short and sweet picture book targeted for early and non-readers. Written by a veteran professional soccer player telling her own story, The Girl Who Kept Going is also an inspirational tale that will encourage young readers to never give up on their dreams. The artwork by Elena H. adds to the overall appeal of the book. The open ending gives the team of McCarty and Elena H. a chance to further Tiffany’s story and add depth to it.
