Holly Quick Backlist Reviews, Bookman!: Week 53

Just to get through some backlog of books I've read, I'll post 4 super short reviews of backlist titles every Wednesday.

  1. Marry Kiss Kill by Anne Flett-Giordano (Prospect Park Books, 2015):  I thought this would be a fun and funny book with a mystery to follow along with. Sadly most of the jokes were simply not funny. I considered giving up on it quite a few times, but I was a bit too curious to see whodunnit. 3 stars.
  2. The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman, Illustrated by Chris Riddell (HarperCollins, 2015): Imagine combing a bit of Snow White with a lot of Sleeping Beauty while turning Sleeping Beauty on its head and having zombie-like creatures. The art is really beautiful as well. 5 stars.
  3. The Hallowed Ones Duology by Laura Bickle (Graphia, 2012): Incredible. Can't recommend enough. 5 stars.
  4. Neither Wolf nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder by Kent Nerburn (New World Library, 1994): Essentially it's about the interactions between two men, Nerburn and Dan. Nerburn is a white man who had helped with an oral history project on a reservation. Dan had read it and through his granddaughter asked Nerburn to come and help him write a book. There are lots of stumbles and frustrations along the way while the two men try to understand each other. It's a really interesting read. It was engaging from the beginning and I really liked that while we were reading a lot of opinions about wider trends, the book didn't try to say that this is how all Native American or how all white people think. While a lot of the book was that discussion of opposing and misunderstanding viewpoints, there was also the clear narrative of two people becoming closer. 5 stars.
