The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka (Author) and Lane Smith (Illustrator)
What if, the so-called "big bad" wolf was not as evil as he was portrayed? What if, instead, he had a birthday cake for his beloved granny while having a sneezing fit? Author Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith turn the classic story "The Three Little Pigs" on its head in this delightful and heartfelt picture book, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.
When I first read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, I honestly think my view on stories and books shifted. Yes, I would've been quite young, but The True Story of the Three Little Pigs was likely the first book I encountered that was such a clear twist on a familiar story. It seemed goofy at first to consider that the wolf wasn't evil--that was the story I'd heard time and time again. But, Scieszka's words made me think about how all stories have multiple points of view, and not everything we've been told as the truth is 100% what happened. Perhaps you think I'm exaggerating this, but I do think The True Story of the Three Little Pigs is a great way to introduce young kids to ideas of differing narratives or even just parody.
It would be remiss not to mention Smith's artwork. Smith's illustrations perfectly carry the tone of the story while engaging readers, young or old.
I still think of this book often even though I have been out of its target age group for quite some time. If that's not high praise, tell me higher and I'll use it.
