Millie and Marty do not want to go to bed. They know that if they do, their parents are sure to have a smashing time—and Millie and Marty would miss it all! After many delays, they go to bed, but the next morning, they see evidence that their parents have been having fun without them: ice cream dishes in the sink, the karaoke machine in the living room, and the Snickerdoodle game out of place. So, the next night, Millie and Marty decide to stay up and watch their parents so they can catch them red-handed. But what they discover is not what they expected. And what will their parents say and do when Millie and Marty let them know they spied on them? Some thoughtful reading comprehension questions round out the delightful Millie & Marty Muldoon Miss Out.

R.S. Prinzo has written a lovely picture book that is perfect for bedtime. Through their spying, Millie and Marty learn the value of a good night’s sleep and that is a message that is sure to please parents and make an impression on young readers. The easy flow of Prinzo’s prose is also sure to carry all readers through Millie & Marty Muldoon Miss Out. Finally, comprehension questions will allow those reading aloud to engage and interact with young readers. Young readers, in turn, will be challenged to reflect on what they just heard.

Sathomi Ekanayake is a wonderful illustrator. Millie and Marty are rendered adorably. There is a softness to the art making Millie & Marty Muldoon Miss Out perfect for a bedtime story. The use of the color blue throughout the illustrations also helps soothe readers and clearly conveys the charming nights of Millie and Marty. My favorite pieces, though, came towards the very end. Millie and Marty’s parents are sitting on their balcony surrounded by purple hanging flowers while other flowering bushes and trees dot the landscape. These images just gave me a great sense of peace and brought a smile to my lips.

Millie & Marty Muldoon Miss Out by R.S. Prinzo is a can’t-miss bedtime story for children 5 to 9 years old. With a good message, flowing prose, reading comprehension questions, and peacefully soft illustrations, it is sure to be a bedtime hit.
