Hedgehog’s Winter, written by Raven Howell and illustrated by Jeanne Ee Wei Yen, is a beautifully crafted picture book that blends storytelling with interactive learning. Offering a unique combination of leveled activities, a heartwarming narrative, and enchanting illustrations, it invites readers into a gentle wintry world that is as educational as it is delightful.

Hedgehog’s Winter kicks off with three suggested activities, clearly designed for different ages and skill levels. Then it easily moves into the story of Hedgehog and his winter. Hedgehog, unlike some of his friends, does not hibernate for the winter and instead seeks fun, excitement, and adventure! After readying himself for the cold and then asking a few friends to come out and explore with him, he eventually finds the company of Deer. Together, Hedgehog and Deer have their fill of wintry fun before retiring for the evening. The book rounds out with a way to practice writing letters, words, and sentences.

Author Raven Howell has written a delightful tale. Although Hedgehog is looking for activity, the overall effect of this picture book is rather soothing. Hedgehog is methodical and is rewarded with company and fun before a well-deserved rest. Illustrator Jeanne Ee Wei Yen’s lovely artwork adds to this soothing effect. Often, wintry scenes can seem rather harsh when depicted, but Yen shows an overall softer side of winter. Additionally, Yen portrays a variety of animals (from a snake to a bear) in a very sweet manner, making the book quite appealing to a young audience.

The opening activities are quite a clever way to engage a variety of readers of different ages and skill levels. One activity will keep young readers carefully examining letters, the next leveled activity will have slightly older readers looking for familiar words, and the final activity will encourage learning beyond Hedgehog’s Winter if readers are so inspired. Also, the writing activity at the end of the book will help readers become writers.

Those looking for ways to engage young readers while reading to them, a soothing tale, and/or charming artwork will enjoy Hedgehog’s Winter. It’s a soothing and delightful tale of Hedgehog’s journey seeking friendship, winter fun, and, ultimately, rest. Illustrator Yen’s artwork brings out a sweetness and softness to this wintry story.
