Books on my to-read list, 12

Just want to share some books I'm looking forward to! Once every 4 weeks, I'll post 4 super short previews of books I'm excited to read.

  1. The Thirteenth Child by Erin A. Craig (Delacorte Press, 2024): From the astonishing mind of Erin A. Craig comes the breathtaking fairy tale retelling readers have been waiting for—what does a life well-lived mean, and how do we justify the impossible choices we make for the ones we love? The Thirteenth Child is a must-read for fans of dark fairy tales, romantasy, and epic fantasy alike.
  2. Mortal Follies: A Novel by Alexis Hall (Gollancz, 2023): It is the year 1814 and Miss Maelys Mitchelmore finds her entry into the highest society of Bath hindered by an irritating curse.
  3. Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime, and Obsession by Rachel Monroe (Scribner, 2019): A provocative and original investigation of our cultural fascination with crime, linking four archetypes—Detective, Victim, Defender, Killer—to four true stories about women driven by obsession.
  4. Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee by Casey Cep (Knopf, 2019): Sitting in the audience during a vigilante’s trial was Harper Lee, who had traveled from New York City to her native Alabama with the idea of writing her own In Cold Blood. Lee spent a year in town reporting, and many more years working on her own version of the case. Now Casey Cep brings this story to life, from the shocking murders to the courtroom drama to the racial politics of the Deep South. At the same time, she offers a deeply moving portrait of one of the country’s most beloved writers and her struggle with fame, success, and the mystery of artistic creativity.
