Book to movie, 12: The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz (Author) and Hatem Aly (Illustrator)

Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.

Set in 1242, The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz (Author) and Hatem Aly (Illustrator) takes readers on a journey. Three children--William (who is on a mission from his monastery), Jacob (who is Jewish and on the run), and Jeanne (who is hiding a prophetic power)--and a dog named Gwenforte (who recently came back from the dead) have adventures and encounter many people who end up sharing their stories.

The Inquisitor's Tale celebrates old styles of storytelling with a child's humor. The book features illuminations like manuscripts of old and this, I think, is key to how it could be a great movie.

I imagine The Inquisitor's Tale to be illustrated much like the movie The Secret of Kells (2009) whihc celebrates The Book of Kells. I can see watching William, Jacob, Jeanne, and Gwenforte going on their adventures as children (and the right adults) watch eagerly. I think an animated element would be key to celebrate manucript illumination.
