Book to movie, 15: Shadow of the Lions

Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.

So, if you read my quick backlist review of Shadow of the Lions: A Novel by Christopher Swann, you'll recall that while I loved the beginning, the ending didn't quite suite. However, I think this twisty mystery could be fixed with a movie adaptation that takes some liberties!

To give a brief plot summary, Shadow of the Lions follows Matthias as he returns to the elite Blackburne School where he graduated 10 years ago. Since then, after some initial success, he has struggled in all aspects of life. Perhaps this is due to being in his 20s, but perhaps it is due to the fact that, 10 years ago, his roommate and best friend, Fritz, vanished from Blackburne. The last words Matthias exchanged with Fritz were in anger and Matthias has never forgiven himself. Upon Matthias's return to Blackburne (this time as a teacher), he feels compelled to finally solve the mystery of Fritz's vanishing. But, will he be able to untangle the web or even comprehend what he unravels?

There are some excellent story beats and tons of intrigue to Shadow of the Lions. It fulfuills its genre quite well. Agian though, the ending could use some improving. However, if Swann is okay with some tweaks, I think this mystery could be compelling and poignant.
