Book to movie, 3: So Long, See You Tomorrow
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.
I covered this book very briefly in week 68 of quick backlist reviews. However, that did not do this book full justice. William Maxwell's So Long, See You Tomorrow is delicate, nuanced, and heartwrenching. It tells the story of a murder, a suicide, and a failed friendship at the center of it all. I could imagine this book so easily as a movie.
The book reviewed incredibly well and made many lists of best books, so clearly I'm not the only one who thinks the story is worth experiencing. I think the drama of the murder and suicide is a solid hook, but the regret and sorrow that follow the broken childhood friendship is what will stay with viewers.
This movie would require impeccable acting and memorable cinematography, but I think the story lends itself well to both of those. With the right execution, this movie would be award-worthy.
