Book to movie, 24: Dear Mothman
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.
If you haven't read my review of Dear Mothman: A Novel in Verse by Robin Gow, you should--I adored it.
For a brief synopsis, Dear Mothman is told through letters from middle-school kid named Noah who is grieving after his best friend (Lewis) died in an accident. Noah writes the letters to Mothman--a cryptid from West Virginia that Noah and Lewis were convinced were real. The novel is, overall, about grief, friendship, earliest romance, identity, and what makes a being (or even a person) a monster.
I more see this movie as a dramatic and dreamlike film. It would require a talented young actor with an expressive voice. It would also require a a director with a solid vision to unite the sometimes surreal moments Noah describes. That said, I think if it's done right it could be powerful and show a side of grief we often ignore because we comment on how children are resilient.
