Arden Arrowood knows she's haunted.
Twenty years ago, her twin sisters--who were just under two--vanished when she was meant to be watching them. They were never found, but Arden remembers a man driving away with them in a gold car.
Now, after her father's death, she has inherited the family home. At a loss for how to finish her thesis or what to do next, she decides to move home to Arrowood in Keokuk, Iowa--much to her remarried mother's consternation. Arden isn't sure what she hopes to find there, but she has never lost hope that her sisters will come home.
As she reconnects with old friends, old loves, and even old foes, Arden's memory and view of her parents--both separately and as a unit--begins to unravel. Arden also decides to connect with a true crime podcast host whose own brother vanished. Yet his motive for solving cold cases has a chilling edge to it.
In the end, Arden will find some answers, but not in ways she hoped or even considered.
Arrowood: A Novel by Laura McHugh, is a layered mysterious thriller. While immediate peril does eventually emerge, the light shadows of it linger in corners throughout Arrowood, Keokuk, and even Arden herself. Rather than wrapping up the story with a perfect bow, McHugh's tale asks readers to consider what they'd believe or be able to live with were they Arden.
Deliberately poignant, beguilingly bewitching, and luminously layered, Arrowood is well worth a read.
