Book to movie, 21: Meddling Kids

Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book that I think could make a great movie.

Meddling Kids: A Novel by Edgar Cantero is one of my favorite books I've ever read. While I was initially intrigued because it was billed as having both eldritch horror and Scooby-Doo as inspirations, it has stayed with me because of its themes of trauma, memory, friendship, and what ties people together as they grow up. Additionally, the balance of fun, fright, and faithfulness to life despite it all is beyond impressive.

I think the same hook that nabbed me would nab many others. Scooby-Doo has remained an important cultural touch point and gritty reboots are additionally popular pitches. The depth of this work balanced by appropriate levity makes it perfect to be watched as one piece.

I would imagine this film to be done live action, but that would require a decent effects budget. I could see it as a gritty animated film as well, but I think it would work better with watching the emotions played across real life human faces.

I always think this book hasn't gotten enough attention, but perhaps a movie adaptation would do it!
