The Truth According to Ember by Danica Nava

Ember Lee Cardinal has a certain relationship with the truth. It's not so much that she lies, it's that she embellishes and bends the truth to her impressive will. And her current will? Get this accounting job. Well, that was her main goal until she bumped into Danuwoa Colson, the IT guy at the company she's applying to and fellow Native. Danuwoa was handsome. Okay, Ember's roommate MAY have called him "Native daddy" and MAYBE Ember agreed.

Ember's creatively written resume lands her the job where she can get to know Danuwoa even better. A mutual attraction is clearly sparking between them, but there is this pesky "no dating coworkers" policy at their job. Besides, there are all the lies that Ember has to keep track of. Surely, Danuwoa wouldn't want her if he knew all of her truths.

Eventually though, Ember and Danuwoa can't deny their attraction to each other anymore and, on a work trip no less, they are caught kissing. While this leads to an immensely satisfying trip for Ember and Danuwoa, Ember ends up being blackmailed by a colleague. This colleague isn't just anyone though. He is the CEO's nephew. As Ember's lies and her colleague's blackmail demands escalate, she begins to (unintentionally) push Danuwoa away. How can she reconcile everything and, maybe, just maybe, still have a shot at the life--and the love--she wants.

Author Danica Nava has created a perfect modern workplace rom-com. Misunderstandings and poor choices of lies culminate in a crescendo of truth-telling and life-changing. Ember and Danuwoa are each well-rounded, distinct, and real-feeling characters. Ember navigates her first time in the corporate world convincingly with a welcome tinge of comedy. Ultimately, the happy ending will have readers relieved and smiling.

Rounding out this delightful read, Nava also includes a thoughtful reflection at the end about what it means to have a rom-com book featuring Native characters and what Nava hopes readers take away from the book.
