Book series to TV show, 9: Smoke
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book series that I think could make a great TV show.
When I first finished reading Smoke by Dan Vyleta, I threw the book across the room--that's how excited I was by the ending.
The Smoke duology is set in a fantastical Victorian England where when you do--or even think--anything sinful, smoke begins to spill from you. Starting off at a school for the upper echelons of society, where the nobles-to-be learn not to smoke, readers meet Charlie Cooper and Thomas Argyle. Thomas and Charlie begin to question what they've been taught about smoke. Eventually, this questioning leads them to Livia and a secret laboratory. Eventually, the three unleash a revolution. The second book in the duology, Soot, takes place ten years later and grapples with the aftermath of what Charlie, Livia, and Thomas have done.
Smoke has impeccable, lush, and gritty characters and worldbuilding. While a few choices made in Soot I would have changed, this can be done with a TV show. Alternatively, the choices Vyleta made can be explored better in a longer form, and perhaps I'll come around. Regardless of my quibbles with Soot, Smoke remains one of my favorite books.
Vyleta's characters and world is worthy of a visual adaptation.
