Prince Dimitri Einhardt is about to come of age in Juztin Bello’s Knight in Shining Armour. Not only does this mean a grand ball in his honor, but it also means the start of his family’s traditional pilgrimage. At the end of this pilgrimage is him, reciting a prayer. The task seems simple enough, but Dimitri knows that the road between his castle life and that prayer is long, arduous, and dangerous. He knows he must rally companions to accompany him on this journey and he can think of no other person he’d want at his side than his best friend (for whom Dimitri secretly yearns), Leander von Athans.
Leander is a magical healer and although many have faith in him, he struggles to have the same faith in himself. While Dimitri knows this, what Dimitri doesn’t know is that Leander yearns for him as well. As the two set out on the pilgrimage with several other colorful friends in tow, the two friends do not know what they will encounter together; whether that be fearsome goblins, royal secrets, or their passion for one another. In this immensely charming, and readable book, author Juztin Bello’s writing talent shines.
I must say, “Bravo.” The story of Dimitri and Leander is one for the ages. Even though their mutual longing is firmly established early, that doesn’t stop the burning anticipation readers will feel as they wait for the two to finally get their romantic act together. While neither Dimitri nor Leander is perfect as themselves or as a partner, they complement each other so well and readers will immediately hop on this ship.
Bello has created a well-rounded fantasy world. There are rules for magic, mystical creatures, and intriguing dynamics between religion and royalty. These are not portrayed in an overly complex way, instead, they invite the reader into a well-imagined world. Additionally, the ending portion of the book—without giving too much away—will make any reader eager to devour the next volume in this series.
Knight in Shining Armour by Juztin Bello is a thoroughly enjoyable YA romantasy written for readers aged 13 to 18. It has romantic tropes that will light up any romance reader and a good dose of magic to accompany the tale. Dimitri and Leander and their love will stay with the reader long after the final page. To quote Charles Dickens, "If that’s not high praise, tell me higher, and I’ll use it."
