The Deep Dark: A Graphic Novel by Molly Knox Ostertag

Magdalena "Mags" Herrera has a secret. A secret that is locked in her grandma's basement. A secret that needs blood. A secret that has killed a child.

Mags has made peace with the ritual of keeping her secret alive. Soon, she will graduate from high school, but she feels older than that. She takes care of her aging grandmother, works a part-time job, and has a relationship--sort of (the girl she makes out with does have a boyfriend after all).

Then, her childhood friend Nessa comes back to town, bringing with her vivid and colorful memories. Soon, Mags feels like she can open up to Nessa. And it'd be so easy. But Mags can't do that, so she shuts Nessa out. That is, until Nessa's dangerous ex comes to town. Then, Mags must face that she needs ot find a different way to handle her secret, her relationships, her life.

Wonderfully and evocatively told, The Deep Dark is a fantastical exploration of inherited trauma, love, tragedy, and magic. Molly Knox Ostertag's artwork and words work perfectly in sync to tell Mags and Nessa's story.

This graphic novel is not to be missed.
