The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers (Author) and Shawn Harris (Illustrator)

Johannes is the Eyes. He runs the park and reports what he sees to the three bison who, while fenced, are the sage elders of the park. Under Johannes is a team of assistant eyes who help Johanne learn the goings on of the park. Johannes is proud and content with his role, but one day the humans begin to build a museum--a word Johannes learns.

From then on, things in the park begin to change. Johannes becomes a wanted dog, but he wants to remain free. Then come the goats. One goat in particular, Helene, shows Johannes a new world full of impossible things--like freeing the bison.

Dave Eggers has written a wonderfully moving novel and is sure to stir even skeptical readers of such a dreamlike book. The deluxe edition is worth it as it frames Shawn Harris's impeccably beautiful illustrations with the pomp they deserve.
