Book series to TV show, 20: Ladycastle
Every four weeks, I will be writing about a book series that I think could make a great TV show.
I may be cheating a bit as this is a comic series instead of a book series, but since this is my blog, I get to make the rules! And I say, I'll allow it!
Ladycastle is a comic series with only four issues, but in those four issues, a lot happens. Readers delve into the story of how, after King Mancastle and all of his vassals set off on a crusade, the women left behind are able to make new--often bolder--lives for themselves. This newfound boldness will become vital when it turns out the meddlesome men were not only eaten by a dragon, but have somehow managed to get a curse laid upon their town which beckons monsters to attack the castle.
Oh, well, nothing women can't handle.
Ladycastle is a feminist fantasy romp. While at times quite playful, the comic series is seriously empowering. So many debates are had about the role of women in various fantasy series, but this series is nearly all women so they get to play all roles.
Although I love artist Ashley A. Woods's work, I do think this series would be well-served by having live actors. I say this because I think it will make the connection to the female empowerment narrative stronger and will prevent any men from voicing female roles (as happens on some shows).
Ladycastle combines fun, fantasy, and feminism--a winning recipe.
