Judging books by their covers, 11
Just want to share some books whose covers I love! Once every 4 weeks, I'll post 4 books and super short synopses of books whose covers catch my eye.
- Orphan Island by Laurel Snyder (Walden Pond Press, 2017): "A unique and compelling story about nine children who live with no adults on a mysterious island. Anyone who has ever been scared of leaving their family will love this book" (from the Brightly.com review, which named Orphan Island a best book of 2017).
- Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Rey, 2019): The Mayan god of death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark, one-of-a-kind fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore.
- Mamo by Sas Milledge (BOOM!Box, 2022): Orla O’Reilly, the youngest in a long line of hedge witches, is compelled to return home after the death of her grandmother, Mamo. In the wake of her Mamo’s passing, seas are impossible to fish, crops have soured, even Jo Manalo’s attic is taken over by a poltergeist! And to make matter worse it appears that the cause is Mamo, or her mislaid bones that is. Can Orla shoulder the responsibility of quieting her Mamo’s spirit, saving her hometown, and will she have to step up as the new witch of Haresden like Mamo always wanted?
- Stories of the Islands by Clar Angkasa (Holiday House, 2023): Journey into a land of magic and powerful girls in this feminist graphic novel retelling of three Indonesian folktales.
